What is a Wart
A wart starts out as a virus – the Human Papilloma Virus that has infected the body. The virus can then develop into warts on just about any place on the body. The most common places for warts to appear are warts on hands, warts on feet, facial warts and genital warts. However, not all warts are the same.
There are many different types of warts caused by different strains of the virus which is why different people get them in different places on their body. Warts are usually not a health risk and will eventually go away by themselves once the body has fought off the virus, but this can take a considerable amount of time. Warts appear in many different sizes and shapes and can be just singular or form as clusters.
The main types of warts are listed below and they can often attack a particular part of the body:
- Common Warts/Seed Warts – known as Verruca Vulgaris and will have a rough appearance and protrude from the hands and the knees.
- Genital Warts – known as Verruca Acuminata / Condyluma Acuminatum and appear in and around the genital area.
- Flat Warts – known as Verruca Plana and will appear in a number of places such as the face, neck, wrists, hands and knees.
- Plantar Warts – known as Verruca Pedis will appear on the feet and soles of feet and can also appear on the hands. They are hard lumps that can also appear in a clustered formation.
- Filiform Warts – known as Verruca Vulgaris will appear on usually on the face, lips and eyelids. Long and slim in appearance and may have tiny finger like tentacles.
Wart Removal – How to get rid of a Wart
You can treat and get rid of a wart in different ways. There are home treatments and surgical removals performed by specialists. Most people start with home remedies before opting for medical advice which can become costly.
However until the human body’s own immune system fights the virus and removes it you will always be susceptible to new warts developing at any time. Some individuals will not develop any warts even if infected with the virus where as others will have regular outbreaks. Mostly this is down to how healthy a person’s immune system is and the individuals DNA make-up. This can also account for why some people can rid themselves of the virus within months and yet for some people it can take years. Eating a well balanced and healthy diet with regular exercise will ultimately boost the immune system and keep it strong. Children tend to have lower immune systems than adults which could also account for why children seem to be more susceptible to warts.
Home Remedies For Warts
Treating a wart using home remedies is a low cost option that may work for you but will tend to take a longer period of time to completely remove the wart. There are several options available. The Duct Tape method is very popular, which involves covering the wart with duct tape and filing the top off every few days. Nail polish has also been used as a treatment for warts as it is thought that by sealing the wart it will starve it of oxygen and destroy it. One of the oldest methods used is onions and garlic as it is thought they contain anti viral properties.

Natural Treatments
Natural oils are great for wart removal as they contain no harsh chemicals or pesticides so are kinder to the skin and won’t leave any scarring. The oils are usually taken from plant extracts or natural produce that have healing and anti viral properties within them. People with genital warts in particular favour a natural treatment as they usually want them removed as quickly as possible but also prefer a kinder treatment as the skin around the genitals is very delicate. Two of the best leading natural treatments we have found are Amoils for most common types of warts including facial warts and Dermisil for genital warts. For more information on amoils click here. Over the counter products
Products that can be bought over the counter that are not natural treatments will usually contain salicylic acid that works by destroying the protein that makes up a wart. These are available in a wide range of products from drops to plasters. As this is a chemical treatment though it is advisable to read the instructions completely before applying to any wart as some of these treatments may not be suitable for genital warts or facial warts.
Over the counter freezing products have also come onto the market which allows the user to freeze off the wart. Similar to that offered by a doctor but usually a lesser strength liquid.
Surgical Wart Removal
This is usually the last option people will try as it can become an expensive course of treatment. Cryotherapy is common for wart treatment as it uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart off or alternatively an injection of Cantharidin to blister the wart and lift it off the skin. Laser treatment can also be offered usually as a last resort. With any surgical treatment though you will need to seek professional advice and discuss all options with a qualified doctor.
